The entire history of Crete can be conditionally divided into several periods:

 

• Minoan period (until the 15th century BC)

• The Greek period (Achaean and Dorian), which lasted until 67 BC

• Roman period (67 BC - 395 BC)

• Two Byzantine periods separated by the Arab invasion (395 A.D. - 1204 A.D.)

• The Venetian period (1204 - 1669 years)

• Ottoman rule (1669 - 1898)

• New History (1898 to the present)
